Some Frequently Asked Questions about Oculus

Q: I'm having FTP problems. There is always an error in the FTP Log window that says something like
STOR ftp.tripod.com/whoever/cam.jpg.tmp
553 Permission denied. Filename?
or
STOR ftp://ftp.aol.com/myname/acam.jpg.tmp
550 File not found
What can I do?

A: The answer to this problem is quite simple. You must change the FTP Path setting in the Photo... Settings dialog.
In this field goes the path to the location on the FTP server where your file is to be found. You do not need (nor should) put in an "ftp://hostname.com" specifier or the hostname. You need to put in the path to the file as a relative path from your login directory.

For example:
On GeoCities, you do not need to include the community or address. You just need to use the path from your home. So if you have a folder called "webcam" and you want to put your photos name "mycam.jpg" in there, you would use the path "webcam/mycam.jpg" in the FTP Path field.

If you're not going to use folders, you just need to put the "mycam.jpg" in the FTP Path field, and you'll be set.

Q: Oculus seems to upload okay, but my users report that my Web Cam pages never update.

A: This is most likely a problem with your Web Cam's HTML. You may want to look at some of the included sample documents or the Oculus Web Cam example pages and save their content as HTML as a guide. Note also that some browsers perform caching in such a way that when you change the content of your page, you may need to refresh the cache.

Here's some HTML code that you can put in your HEAD section which should help your refreshes.

<META HTTP-EQUIV="Expires" CONTENT="Fri, 01 Jan 1999 1:00:00 GMT">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="60; URL=http://yourhost.com/yourpage.html">

This code will cause the page to be reloaded every 60 seconds.

Q: I want to use Java to update my page, so that the entire page doesn't have to update. How can I do this?

A: There is a freeware Java applet that will allow you to do this. See the Webcam32 and Java Applets page for details. It describes what it takes for Webcam32, but the description is equally useful for Oculus.

Q: Oculus doesn't capture after I install QuickTime 4.0!

A: When you upgrade to QuickTime 4.0, make sure you select the Full Install or Authoring, Capture and Effects portions.

Q: Help! There are lots of errors in my FTP Log window!

A: If you notice an error stating your user name or password is wrong, correct the offending field and try again. If you notice an error saying that a file or directory does not exist, check to make sure that the containing directory does indeed exist. Note that sometimes the http:// location does not coincide with the ftp:// location. See below for details.

A: Some of these errors are part of the normal operation of Oculus. The FTP log contains a complete record of the FTP command stream. When Oculus notices that the FTP connection times out (ie. no traffic for 9 minutes), it will re-connect when it needs to upload. Also, if Oculus is renaming or changing the permissions of a file, certain FTP servers will respond with an error. Oculus will note this and stop trying to do that operation.

If you're particularly concerned with the Error, send a message containing the entire FTP log and the offending document to] support@intlweb.com.

Q: Why does the progress bar look like it's split?

A: If you have selected motion detection along with a timed trigger, the status bar will be split with the timed trigger above the motion detection trigger. See Trigger Reference for a picture which describes this.

Q: I used 2.5 and now when I open my document with 2.0, it crashes.

A: 2.5 documents (or 2.0 documents that have been saved after running 2.5) are incompatible with 2.0.
Save any converted 2.5 documents with a different name if you wish to use them with 2.0.

Q: I've got a QuickCam. When I first start Oculus I see a very bad preview. The brightness and contrast etc. appear to be very out-of-whack.

A: The QuickCam digitizer has an auto-brightness feature. It works by checking images as they are captured and adjusting the brightness. When Oculus runs, it is only taking one picture at a time. This causes the auto-brightness feature to not work as quickly as you would expect. Eventually, it will adjust itself to the correct brightness.

Q: What are all these temp files for?

A: When Oculus is creating a time-lapsed movie, it must save intermediate files that it will later use to create the movie. When Oculus no longer needs these files, it gets rid of them. You can delete them when Oculus is not running, however, the next time you start Oculus, it will need to gather another set before it can create the time-lapsed movie.

Q: Can I delete the temp files?

A: This is probably not a good idea to do when Oculus is running. Feel free to delete them when Oculus is not running. However, note that doing this will cause a new movie file to be started when you restart Oculus - that is, you'll have to wait until a complete set of photos are taken before a movie will be created.

Q: My files are getting uploaded (no errors in the FTP log) but I don't see the images on my web site. What am I doing wrong?

A: Many Web Servers and FTP Servers are set up with different "root" directories for the FTP server and the Web Server.

Here's an example of a common Web Server layout.

/user/you/public_html/htdocs/ * <- this is the full path to your
                               	    web page directory
/user/you/ftp/ * <- this is the full path to your FTP directory

If your Web Server is set up this way, you will need to put the complete path to the file that you want, not a partial path.

If you use Fetch to log into your FTP account, you can see the path that the default FTP login will put you in. From there, you should be able to determine how to formulate your path.

Q: I have Web Cam, can I put it on the Oculus example page?

A: If you are a registered user of Oculus, and are using Oculus for your Web Cam, we'd love to include a link to your page on our example page. Just send a note to examplecam@poubelle.com along with a short description of your page.

Poubelle Software and International Web reserve the right to refuse to carry a link to any site we feel is inappropriate.

Q: I can't Quit!

A: Press (cmd-.) or <esc> to cancel the current upload. You will then be able to quit.

Q: Oculus doesn't cycle my files?

A1: Try using a full path to your FTP destination file. Some FTP servers cannot perform the rename command on relative or special pathnames (ie. using the tilde `~' character for your home directory).

A2: Certain FTP servers do not support the rename command. If your FTP server does not support the FTP rename commands, and Photo and Movie cycling features will not work.

Q: Sometimes I get a skipped image in my cycled images (or movies)?

A: If someone is currently downloading an image (or movie), Oculus cannot change the name of the image, and will skip renaming that image. This will result in a skipped image.

Q: What's different about Oculus when I register?

A: Oculus is a fully functional application even before you register. However, non-registered copies of Oculus will clear the destination name (ie, the FTP server and password) each time you open a document. This means that your saved and restored documents will require modification before they will function again as a WebCam.

Q: The non-English translations are horrible. Can you fix them?

A: Why yes we can. Please send your suggestions as to what should be changed to oculus@poubelle.com or support@intlweb.com and we will correct our errors. Machine translation isn't quite up to par yet, but we aren't familiar enough with the languages to know the difference.
